Calvin Coon

“A life well lived”

1925-2012

Our loving father and grandfather, Calvin Coolidge Coon passed away peacefully at home May 31, 2012 on a beautiful spring morning.  He was born November 3, 1925 in Magna, Utah to William H. and Janet Barr Coon.  He married Shirley Turpin December 30, 1947 in Elko, Nevada beginning a journey together of 56 years.

Calvin was raised in Magna and remained a lifelong resident living among wonderful neighbors and friends. His youth was shaped by the Depression which led to various capers and escapades.  He graduated from Cyprus High in 1943 and joined the Merchant Marines in WWII.  Calvin sailed to remote Pacific Islands and gained a love of ships and the sea.  He was a great storyteller and made history come alive for his children and grandchildren.

Calvin worked at Kennecott for 43 years where he enjoyed the companionship of his fellow workers.  He was a Little League baseball coach, Scout leader, and one of the last members of the ROMEO Club (retired old men eating out).  Calvin prided himself as a craftsman and his home was a showcase of his woodworking skills.  He was a perpetual teaser and never missed a chance at a good joke.  He was a devoted caretaker who gave endless hours of service to others.  Calvin loved life—music, travel, sports, good food, reading, and marveled at the beauty of earth and the universe.  He treasured his many friends and dedicated his life to his family.

Calvin leaves behind his precious children; Jerry, Jackie, and Richard (Shannon); beloved grandchildren Chelsea, Calley, Zachary, Spencer, and Westin Coon, Gavin (Vivian), Garrett (Silvia), McKenzie (Rob) Moore, and Keshia Catten, Shawn and Katie Coon; adorable great-grandchildren Katrina, Evan, and Eden Catten.  He is survived by his dear sister Flossee Bowers and in-laws Glen and Lucille Turpin.  He was preceded in death by his loving wife, sweet daughter Susie, parents, brothers and sisters Bill, Kelly, Effie, and Ellen; in-laws Sherman and Afton Drain, Vernal and Verda Turpin.

A celebration of Calvin’s life will be held at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center (Rm. 104) 1355 W. 3100 S. West Valley City on Friday, June 8th 7-9 pm.  A viewing will be held 10:30-11:45 am at the Pleasant Green Chapel, 8739 W. 3000 S. in Magna on Saturday, June 9th.  Funeral services will follow at the church at noon.  Interment, Valley View Memoral Park.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the “Calvin Coon Charitable Fund” at Cyprus Credit Union which will be distributed to schools and various charities—PO Box 9002  West Jordan, Utah 84084/801-260-7600.  Online condolences: peelfuneralhome.com
