Betty Plott

September 21, 1930 — June 27, 2019

Betty May Mower Plott, 88, passed away peacefully in her home on June 27, 2019.  She was born on September 21, 1930 in Salt Lake City to Frances May Meads and John Herbert Mower,  She was the oldest child and later was joined by her brother, Bud, and her sister, Carol. She had a very happy childhood growing up on Spring Lane in Holladay by Shady Lake.  She graduated from Granite High School and attended BYU for one year, making many dear friends.

Following the untimely death of her beloved father, she met a handsome young sailor at a ballgame.  Thus began the great love story of Betty May and Leon Plott. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on October 24, 1952 and settled in the basement of a house on Highland Drive near 33th South.  They were blessed with their first son, Gary, on September 6, 1953. Shortly after that they moved to their home in Magna. Blaine joined the family on April 28, 1955 and Vickie came along on January 15, 1957.  In 1972, Betty and Leon adopted their nephew, Ted, whose mother had been killed in a car accident. Their family was now complete.

Betty loved to swim and probably taught half of Magna how to swim. She taught and was the lifeguard at the pool at Cyprus High School for many years.  She helped many scouts earn their swimming merit badge including her grandson, Jason.

Betty loved to crochet and sew.  Many people have afghans, baby blankets and hankies that she lovingly made and shared.  She loved doing ceramics and painted many beautiful pictures that she shared with her family and friends.

Betty wasn’t much of a cook but boy could she make good pies!  Her favorite were her pumpkin pies made from our old Halloween pumpkins.  At Thanksgiving her kitchen was wall to wall pie crusts as she baked everyone’s favorite flavor of pie.

Betty served faithfully in many callings in the Church both on the ward and stake level.  Several years after Leon passed away, Betty was called to be a missionary at the Soap Factory on 7200 West.  She was thrilled to finally serve a mission and proudly wore her name badge. She made many dear friends at the factory.   She even continued to go up there occasionally to fix their snacks after she was released due to health problems.

In November of 1978, Betty’s true calling began--she became a grandma for the first time.  Jason would be her only grandson as 3 beautiful girls soon joined the family--Krystal, Natalie and Melissa.  Oh how she loved her grandkids, who affectionately called her “Gra”. Seldom did you find Gra and Pa without one or more of the grandkids either in the car going somewhere or simply playing at their house.  These 4 precious kids were her whole world!

Soon after the death of her beloved Leon, Betty got a new calling - “Great Gra”.  Dawson was her first great-grandchild and she looked forward to the days she would tend him while his mom worked.  Over the next few years, Kennidee, Madison, Kyson, Stockton, Treyson, Ainsley, Kambree and Myles joined the family.  She loved them all and enjoyed celebrating their birthdays, baptisms, sporting games and dance recitals.

In the last few years she battled many serious health problems.  Each time this happened she thought for sure Leon would come get her.  Instead she battled through rehab and got to go back home. This past winter, after 2 falls and a stroke, she feared she may have to permanently leave her beloved house because none of her kids could physically take her into their homes and care for her.  Then some angels answered her many prayers to be able to die at home. Jeff and Erika Van Tassell, along with their 3 kids, lovingly and selflessly became her full-time caregivers along with the assistance of the wonderful people at Elevation Hospice. She loved you all as you tenderly ministered to her every need so she could stay at home.  There are no words to express our thanks to all of you for helping her be able to stay home.

Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leon, and her son, Blaine who died within weeks of each other in 2003, her parents and her brother, Bud.

She is survived by her children:  Gary (Corrinne), Vickie (Paul) Daraban, and Ted; her grandchildren: Jason and Krystal Plott, Natalie (Chris) MacDonald, and Melissa Bona; great-grandchildren:  Dawson Lourenco, Kennidee, Kyson, Treyson and Kambree Plott; Madison, Stockton, Ainsley and Myles MacDonald; her sister, Carol Eskelson, and many other adopted grandchildren.
