Brent Johnston

Brent Johnston passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of June 15, 2026.

Born on December 12, 1941, to Jack and Lois Johnston, Brent grew up in Magna, Utah, alongside his three brothers, Kent, Mark, and Jim. From an early age, he was an avid reader, athlete, musician, and curious student of the world around him. He developed a strong interest in chemistry and once envisioned attending MIT. Those plans changed when he discovered the trumpet—a passion that would shape the course of his life and become one of his greatest loves.

Brent attended Utah State University, where he studied pre-engineering and music. A talented athlete as well as a musician, he played on the university’s freshman basketball team. He later enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served from 1965 to 1969. During his military service, he was fortunate to combine his love of music with his duty to country, serving as an Army musician.

Brent was a lifelong student and teacher. He generously shared his knowledge with anyone eager to learn, dedicating countless hours to teaching both golf and trumpet throughout the community. If he learned that someone shared his love of music or sports, he could happily spend hours discussing the finer points of either subject. He introduced all four of his children to golf at a young age and instilled in them a lasting appreciation for music, discipline, and lifelong learning.

His craft and dedication led him to Chicago, where he spent many years helping build some of the finest trumpets in the world for Schilke Music. During his time there, he had the opportunity to perform with the Chicago Symphony and played with his band, The Even Stevens. Music remained a constant source of joy, purpose, and connection throughout his life.

He had retired from employment with the Deseret Chemical Depot in 2011 with various career milestones as an exemplary performer. He was extremely proud of the work he did as it was in service of destroying chemical weapons. 

After retiring, he enjoyed golfing with his daughter, JoAva, and son Zachary- who are exceptional at the sport. He also took frequent long drives where he explored much of the neighboring scenery. In 2020, he leaned well into a state of dementia and more care was needed. 

In his later years, Brent was lovingly cared for by his daughter, Chyme Leonhardt; her husband, David Bruno; David’s mother, Maria; family friend, Serra and son, Nikolai. Their home became a place of comfort, companionship, and love—a home Brent came to cherish deeply until his passing.

Brent will be remembered for his sharp mind, generous spirit, devotion to teaching, and enthusiasm for music and sports. He leaves behind a legacy of knowledge, musicianship, and passion that lives on in the many people whose lives he touched.

Brent is survived by his brothers, Kent (Gail) Johnston, Jim (Patty) Johnston Mark (Vicki) Johnston; and by his children, JoAva Christensen, Joshua Johnston, Chyme Leonhardt (David Bruno), and Zachary Johnston and their mother, Sherry (John Spikes) with 7 loving grandchildren and one great granddaughter. 

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, students, fellow musicians, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory bring comfort and inspiration to those he leaves behind.

A celebration of his life will be on July 5th between 12-3pm at the Peel Funeral Home in his hometown of Magna.
