Howard Boyd McIntosh

Howard Boyd McIntosh passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at the age of 89. He was born on February 2, 1937, in Burlington, Wyoming the eleventh of 12 children of Ira J and Florence Adelle Yorgason McIntosh. His childhood and early adult life were spent working on the family farm. He was always interested in anything mechanical and was able to fix anything on the farm by taking it apart, repairing whatever wasn't working, and reassembling it without any formal training. He also loved sports and was a gifted athlete. After graduating from Burlington High School, he attended Northwest Junior College, where he lettered in sports.

After graduating from Northwest, he served an LDS mission in the New England States mission. He then attended BYU. To help with the cost of school, he enlisted in the Utah National Guard. His unit became activated, and he served active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After returning to school, he met and fell in love with L. Jean Echevarria, and they were married in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on February 2, 1963.

After he graduated from BYU with a bachelor's degree in agronomy, he and Jean moved back to Burlington, Wyoming, to farm with his brother Bob. After a year and a half of farming, his love of auto mechanics became too great to ignore, and the young couple returned to BYU, where he earned another bachelor's degree in education. He then began his first and only teaching job at Cyprus High School, where he taught auto mechanics until he retired in 1998. While teaching, he earned a master's degree in education from Utah State University.

Howard loved playing and watching sports and was a season ticket holder for BYU football for several years. He would never hesitate to loudly let the refs know when they were wrong, whether watching live or on TV. He later became a ref for church basketball games and for high school football.

He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully as a counselor in the Bishopric, as a Bishop, as a counselor to the Stake President, as a member of the High Council, and many other callings, including serving a second mission at the Church and Family History Center in Salt Lake City with his beloved wife Jean.

He was incredibly generous with his time and resources, whether serving in the church, fixing vehicles for neighbors, friends, and family, donating money to several charities, or babysitting his grandchildren. He was always willing to help!

He loved working on old cars, and he drove and repaired a 1950's Chevy truck for the last twenty-five years of his life. During those same years, he enjoyed countless hours at McIntosh Customs working on old cars and trucks with his son Mike. He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife Jean, children Janet, Michael (Sundee), Lori (Hau) Le, Joni (Brian) Smith, and Jeni Griffith, thirteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and hundreds of cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and dear friends that he considered as much family as his blood relatives.

He is preceded in death by his parents Ira and Della, his In-Laws John and Ruth Echevarria, his siblings Lavern (Don) Shanor, Gertrude (Cliff) Vogelsberg, Byrne (Jill), Gordan (Shirley), Gene, Iris (Richard) Lunt, Robert (Carol), Duane (Rita), Ira Udell (Kay), Donald, and Eleanor (Cloyd) Bates.

There will be a viewing where friends and family can express their condolences on Friday, June 19, 2026, from 5 to 7 PM at the Lakeridge 11th Ward building located at 7825 West Sharon Drive, Magna, Utah. A second viewing will take place beginning at 10 AM at the same building on June 20, 2026, followed by funeral services beginning at 11 AM.

Interment at Utah Veterans Memorial Park will take place at a later date, with a graveside service for his close family.
