Mary Tavarozzi Lewis

(Grams)

March 6, 1913 ~ April 8, 2012

Mary immigrated from Agnone, Italy, through Ellis Island, with her mother, Giuseppina "Josephine" Cacciavillani Tavarozzi on December 24, 1919 at the age of 6 on the passenger ship Giuseppe Verdi (named after an Italian Romantic Composer of the 19 th century).  She was raised with three sisters in an American Italian home life in Tooele, Utah.  She graduated from Tooele High School in 1931.  At the age of 28 she was introduced to and married Joseph Frank Lewis (Joe Joe) on June 25, 1941.  Three children were born which produced 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.  She never learned to swim, ride a bike, or work a job outside the home, but she was more than proficient in cooking and taking care of her children and family.  The Italian traditions that were woven into our daily fabric by her live on through great family traditions like the Christmas Eve Fish dinner, Pizzelle's, and other Italian pastries.  She cleaned all the wild game and fish that her husband brought home and prepared every meal - it was her job and she did it without concern or question.  Mary was simply the best at what she did and that was making sure everyone was taken care of.  She was truly a treasure for all of us to remember.  Ti amo nonna, reposino in pace.  She is survived by children, Marilyn Lewis Beatty (Mike), Carol Lewis Underberg (Gary), and Tony Lewis (Pam); grandchildren, Jeff Beatty, David Beatty (Valerie), Cathy McKenzie (Scott), Craig Deveraux (Jolene), Heidi Underberg and Dan Lewis; great grandchildren, Lindsey Kessler (Darrell), Keanan Beatty, Danielle and Samantha Beatty, Abigail, Jake, and Cooper Deveraux, Katie and Karlie McKenzie; great-great grandchildren, Darrell Michael "DJ", Monique, Cameron, and Bronson Kessler; sister, Annie Pizzello; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Preceded in death by spouse, Joseph Frank Lewis (died February 3, 1981); mother, Giuseppina (Josephine) Tavarozzi; father, Giuseppa "Joseph" Tavarozzi; sisters, Olga Ronkovich and Dena Sweeda.  A special thanks to all of the wonderful caretakers of the Beehive Home for loving our mother/grandmother as much as we did.  A warm thank you to all the Hospice workers for the time they spent with her as well.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2012 at the Valley View Memorial Park, 4400 W. 4100 S.  Friends and family may call Thursday 6-8 p.m. at Peel Funeral Home, 8525 W. 2700 S.  Online condolences: www.peelfuneralhome.com
