Michael Young

September 4, 1958 — September 22, 2026

Michael Young

Michael Young, beloved son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2026, after a short but courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 68.

Michael was born September 4, 1958, to his parents, Dennis Albert Stanley Young and Susan Brown Young, in Mancot, North Wales. He attended school in Wales and played soccer for several school and youth soccer groups as a goalie. His teams were very successful, winning many tournaments and trophies. His love of soccer continued for his whole life, and he was an avid supporter of the Chelsea F.C., which led to a friendly rivalry with his son, Ethan, who is a Manchester United F.C. supporter. He also coached all of his children in county soccer.

When Mike learned of a half-sister, Wendy, living in Utah, he began writing to her and asked if she knew any “American birds” (girls) he could write to as well. Mike and Lori Jordan, his soon-to-be wife, began writing to each other, and in May of 1980, he immigrated with his parents and brother, Steven, to the United States, where he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1981. Lori and Mike were married on March 4, 1982, in the Jordan River Temple. They are the parents of five children and grandparents of seven grandchildren. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren and all their many accomplishments.

Mike served in many callings in the church, including high council, bishopric, stake mission presidency, and scouting. He loved serving in the church and meeting each week with his ward family, where he was known for his warm and charming personality and his ability to remember and relate jokes, especially puns. He loved attending the temple, and just before his illness he was able to attend four different temples in a week during a trip to Canada with his son, Phil.

Mike was a hard worker, working at Lake Point Salt, Cargill Salt, and Carlisle Syntec, until his retirement in 2025. He was a man with many friends, and he loved writing letters, especially to his friend, Phil Hallows, with whom he corresponded for over 46 years. He also wrote to the missionaries who served from his ward, and he had recently started writing letters back and forth with his grandson, Will.

He was proud of becoming an American citizen in 1985, but Mike was still a Welshman in his heart. He could speak some Welsh, and loved teaching those he met about his country. He was proud so many Welsh singers were in the first Tabernacle Choir, and cried whenever he heard the Welsh national anthem sung in the World Cup.

Mike is survived by his wife, Lori, and their children, Phillip, Ethan (Lauren), Stuart (Susan), Vanessa (Daniel), and Emily (Abraham), his brothers, Christopher (Jane), and Steven (Diane), and his grandchildren, Jane, Will, Madison, Eliza, Sarah, Claire, and Dean.

He was predeceased by his parents, Dennis and Susan, and his half-sister, Wendy (George) Tyner.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and again on Friday, October 9, 2026, from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. All services will be held at the Lake Point Ward Chapel, 1366 Canyon Road, Lake Point, Utah. Interment will follow in the Lake Point Cemetery.

The family especially thanks the medical staff at Intermountain Medical Center and LDS Hospital for their kind and professional care of Mike during his final weeks, and acknowledges with gratitude the many condolences received from friends and family around the world.
