Richard Field Hymas

Richard Field Hymas returned home on the morning of 27 Aug 2026. He passed away quietly and peacefully in his home in Magna, Utah.

Richard was born on 26 December 1934 to Merrill Davis Hymas, Sr. and Ida Delvene Field in Salt Lake City, Utah. Richard married Norma Lee Wight on the 5th of May 1954 in the Salt Lake Temple. He served in the U.S. Army in Puerto Rico for 2 years before completing his degree in Accounting and going to work for the IRS. After retiring from the IRS, he went to work for the LDS Church in the Finance Department.

Richard was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He and Norma had 5 children, 13 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren, with more on the way. After the passing of Norma in 1992, Richard married Sumiko Mikami on 18 December 1993.

Richard loved to serve the Lord. In addition to his many various ward and stake callings, Richard and Sumiko served 5 LDS church missions. These included Australia, Thailand, Russia, and 2 local service missions in Salt Lake City, Utah. Richard and Sumiko would often be seen cleaning the ward building after going for their morning walk.

Richard also loved good movies. When any of his children would watch a good movie, they would text it to Richard and Sumiko to watch. He was especially fond of “A Christmas Story” and would watch it every year on Christmas Eve. He also really liked “Napoleon Dynamite,” for reasons many could not understand.

He and his children would meet every Monday night at City Creek Food Court for an evening meal and socializing. Most conversations revolved around the stock market and politics.

He is survived by his children Hewitt Merrill, Russell Edward, Jan, and Glen Wight.

He is preceded in death by his spouse Norma and his son Richard Lee.
