Kathryn Goates

October 12, 1928 — December 26, 2020

Our loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and friend, Kathryn Glade Rice Goates, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2020.

Kathryn was born October 12, 1928 in Salt Lake City, Utah to George Blair Glade and Velma Nuttall Glade.  She married her sweetheart John William Rice on June 22, 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple. They spent 34 wonderful years together until John passed away in September 1983. Kathryn married Donald Keith Goates on July 6, 1993 and they were married for almost 25 years until Don’s death in February 2018.

Kathryn was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was actively involved in various callings throughout her life. Studying the scriptures daily was also an important part of her life and brought her inspiration and peace.

She made everyone feel like they were her “favorite” as she listened and gave positive encouragement to all. She had an optimistic outlook, her sweet smile and compassion was felt by family, friends and those she came in contact with. Kathryn was a wonderful hostess who enjoyed having people over to her home. Her family especially enjoyed making fudge, taffy and playing games with her.

Kathyrn always wanted to be a nurse. She went back to school in 1965 and graduated in 1967 from the BYU Nursing Program and loved her 30 years at LDS Hospital. She worked in the Neurological ICU, as a nurse recruiter and a surgical nurse.  After retiring she continued to volunteer at the hospital as a greeter welcoming people with her warm smile.

She is survived by her children, Margene Sanchez (Sal), Bonnie Haymore (John), Bill Rice, (Cynde), David Rice (Debbie); and Don’s children, Blair Goates (Debbie), and Garth Goates (Kim); sister, Helen Fenton; and brother, Royden Glade (Rebecca). She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, George Glade and Preston Glade; 1 sister, Barbara Palmer; and 1 great-grandson.  Kathryn’s 20 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild were always in her thoughts and prayers.

Private funeral services with Zoom will be at noon on Saturday, January 2, 2020 at the Peel Funeral Home, 8525 West Main Street, Magna, UT.  Due to COVID restrictions, it will be invitation only onsite, with everyone invited to participate on Zoom. Everyone is welcome to the gravesite dedication, 1:30 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Drive, (1495 East).
